About Southern Health Libraries

To access the library online visit Southern Health (select Education > Library link). The library is a separate organisation, independent of the Monash University Library. It currently has five libraries including a new library at Berwick. The library supports and resources the learning, teaching and research activities of staff and students based at Southern Health sites. In addition to general medicine and surgery, collection strengths are:

  • evidence-based medicine and health evaluation
  • human reproduction and development
  • obstetrics and gynaecology
  • paediatrics
  • psychological medicine

The library also supports the staff and students based in affiliated institutes, ie the Monash Medical Centre, the Monash Institute of Health Services Research (restricted access), the Monash Institute of Medical Research and Prince Henry's Institute.

Who may borrow from these libraries

  • all Monash University staff, Honorary staff and postgraduate students (Masters and Doctorates only)
  • site based Monash University Graduate Diploma and Honours' students
  • site based Monash University MBBS students
  • site based Monash University Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics students (from 2nd year) while enrolled in a site based subject

Loans

  • Eligible users require a current Monash University staff or student ID card. Ask at the Southern Health library desk to register before borrowing.
  • The library has its own collection and loans system. Search the Southern Health catalogue to check the loan status of materials. The loan status (ie availability) shown in the Monash University Library catalogue may not be accurate and the item may not be available on the shelves.
  • Monash University Library owned materials held at Southen Health hospital libraries and listed in the Monash University Library catalogue are often available for loan through the Loan requests function. Requested items can be picked up at a Monash University branch library or at the Ian Potter Library (Alfred Hospital).
  • Restrictions apply to the loan of some materials held, eg videos in the Southern Health libraries are not available for intercampus loan.

Guidelines for use

The library staff provide support to staff and student groups listed above. Library staff are able to provide only limited assistance to the following groups:

  • Monash University staff and students with no other connection to Southern Health hospitals
  • other Monash borrowers, such as CAVAL or Alumni borrowers

Photocopying

  • from the Loans Desk purchase a non-rechargeable photocopy card of the following values: $2, $5 or $10
  • change can be provided
  • 10c per copy
  • same card can be used at all Southern Health libraries.

Undergraduate students may request intercampus photocopying of journal articles or book chapters from Monash University Library material held at any Monash University branch library, the Ian Potter Library (Alfred Hospital) or Southern Health Library for a $2.70 fee per article.

Staff and postgraduate students, including Honours students, can request items not available in their home library or online through the library's Document Delivery Service.
